2021 Equine Practice Internship

Scone Equine Group (SEG) is Australia's largest provider of equine veterinary services with expertise in all areas of horse care across its specialist subsidiary practices. Located in the heart of Australia's Thoroughbred breeding country and across four key horse regions in NSW and Victoria, SEG delivers excellence in equine veterinary health through Scone Equine Hospital, Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre, Avenel Equine Hospital and the Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre, Muswellbrook. SEG equine veterinarians are recognised around the world for their knowledge and specialist skills across the full spectrum of equine practice.

Scone is the heart of the thoroughbred breeding industry in Australia with the second largest population of breeding horses in the world. It is also home to a large performance horse population. Scone is a town of approximately 5000 people and is in close proximity to larger regional towns Tamworth and Newcastle. Sydney is three and a half hours' drive. Scone Equine Hospital is the largest equine veterinary practice in the southern hemisphere, employing approximately 30 equine veterinarians in the peak breeding season time of year.

Scone Equine Hospital offers a 6 month equine practice internship based in Scone commencing at the start of August with a program intended for the intern to gain exposure, experience and training across all sectors of the Scone practice. The internship has a structured timetable that incorporates working with the on-farm ambulatory team, hospital and ICU case work, radiography department, surgery department in the role of anaesthesia, and assistance in the assisted reproduction section.

During the internship there will be supervision and training from specialists in medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and reproduction as well as from other clinicians with proficiencies in their specific area of equine practice. The successful intern may potentially have their position extended beyond the 6 month period by mutual agreement and progression to a junior associate veterinary role in a permanent or seasonal locum position.

Internship Outcomes:

Become familiar with routine reproductive management practices through progressive training sessions to progress to be able to carry out most routine procedures competently. Build on a base of knowledge and experience in commonly encountered conditions from neonatal foals through to adults on farm and how to best manage and treat these cases. The goal is to develop an intern able to carry out ambulatory work independently depending on experience and skill level.

Develop skills so the intern can competently manage on-farm short anaesthesia in foals and yearlings. Become familiar with the equipment and protocols to be competent in managing simple elective anaesthesia induction, maintenance and recovery in hospitalised cases under the training and supervision of a registered specialist anaesthetist.

To become proficient in the routinely used diagnostic and treatment techniques in medicine cases in the hospital and ICU (Clovelly) with both primary medicine cases and post-operative surgical cases. The Equine Practice Intern will be on an afterhours roster at Clovelly but will not have primary call duty, rather will be expected to help the primary duty veterinarian on a one in 3 roster during the week and on weekends.

Be a rotating member of the radiography team who carry out on farm diagnostic and thoroughbred yearling sales radiography. The intern will develop a high level of skill in taking, quality control assessment and be familiar with the process of reviewing digital radiographic images.

The intern will have a role assisting specialist surgeons with their on farm consultation days which includes assisting in the examination and diagnostics and therefore gaining experience in a wide range of cases from foal orthopaedic disease through to sports medicine cases.

This is assisted by weekly review meetings to gain feedback as to progress and expectations. There is a framework of support from a large number of senior clinicians within the practice along with a Human Resources Department to provide assistance and support.
